WTF Six
Philippe Besombes - Princess Lolita
WTF? Give it a listen and see if you don't agree. In the late 70s the French label, Divox, approached Philippe Besombes about releasing an album of his music. Most of the tracks presented were experimental tracks for ballet, different films, etc. Divox wanted a "hit". Being the late 70s a hit would necessarily be in the disco vein as disco was pretty much ruling the airwaves and clubs. What Besombes delivered was Princess Lolita. Not exactly hit material, but fun none the less. The male vocals are slowed way down and the female vocals are sped up to the point of sounding like a cartoon. Cesi est Cela featured 4 tracks from Besombes' archives and the 'hit'. The album was reissued 35 years later on CD with 6 bonus tracks and Princess Lolita was included as the first track but was given the number 0. Very confusing to most CD players, so the track is pretty much skipped. That's probably the way Philippe Besombes intended it to be.

Suzi, Gorgio und der Käfer
I have been a BIG fan of Suzi Lane's Ohh La La for years and do regard this as one of the finest things Giorgio Moroder ever produced. So I was more than happy to find a version on this obscure and notoriously rare danish disco compilation "Stay For The night". After doubting Moroder's originality for a milisecond I blamed Käfer for theft and I'm very happy he did. Check the 2 versions below....

Baby Records rules
For E. & C.
Here's some high flyin' italian disco from 1979 ripped from a copy that was still sealed when I got it. Guessing from the instrumentation I expected Jazz Rock, but no no - it's Funk & Disco... Most of the tracks are really uptempo and I actually don't like uptempo disco, but the usual cheesy strings and crowds of backing girls are missing here - the sound is rather funky and I really like THAT. My #1 fave here is "Hey Lover" - a wonderful summer jam. Download instantly, put it on your ipod and get yourself some sunrays!
Or get your copy here. The prices for this gem have really gone down over the years. Cheers, Basso

Electronic Butterflies

Dan Lacksman is a funny guy. You knew that before but anyway here's a bit of the proof.
If you take the time to listen all the way through the happy, silly, moogy popcorn tunes from A1 to the lovely B1 called Lullaby, B2 will hit you like a etheral meteorite and push you deep into your seat. Almost 13 minutes of Skylab might work like a drug. So please do me a favour and don't skip ; )
Cheers, Basso
Thanks Jamie for the picture and thanks Andrew for making me aware of it's existance!

Disco Frog?

Paris France Transit is a Didier Marouani project from 1982. Kind of a cross-genre exercise with some tracks fitting the cosmic disco mold and others sounding like The Wall era Pink Floyd. Marouani (Ecama on this release) was in good company with a fairly large crew of talented musicians helping with the sound.

One Man Band

Claude Perraudin returned to the studio in early 80s for another solo effort. There is no date listed on this lp but there was a single from it released in 1981 so I suspect that would be the date for Jogging. Once again Claude is playing guitars, keyboards, drums and percussion and providing heavily processed vocals on Speaking Birds. The tracks range from upbeat synthpopesque exercises to very laid back relaxed jams. Perraudin had a good sense of humor which you will notice on a couple tunes. This is the last of his records I've been able to locate. He is rumored to have recorded a record in 1989 called Janus under the name 'Greg Baker' and another in 1999 under his own name called Guitar Tenderness. He died in 2001.

Up, up to the sky

I still remember the day when I discovered this record that became my most admired library record for years. I was listening my way through a huge stack of libraries at my favourite record shop for hours. Among them a bunch of these UBM LPs that I never really saw before. I think there were about 10 of them and it was "hard work" as most of these were not at all my cup of tea. Skip, skip, skip. This one record here raised my interest because I read Manfred Schoof's name on the back as well as Rainer Brüninghaus whom I knew and admired for his keyboard work on some of Volker Kriegel's LPs. When the needle hit the groove the frustration (due to hours of only little listening pleasure) was gone immediately. Very nice! First track "Skyracer"- discoish jazz with a spatial feel... cool. "Neon" - yes, better than okay. And then the sweet "XY Patrol" totally hit me. I have a soft spot for that kind of drumming and my eyes really got wet from listening. Slightly ashamed I looked up to see if the shop-owner was aware of my intense feelings....phew! I think I heard it on repeat (1:45 is not enough) for a couple of times before I got into "Spaceflight". Man- This is it! Six and a half minutes of fantastic Spacedisco-jazz with emotional guitar solos and all that. I've never heard that kind of music on a library record before..... Months later at home I listened to the B-Side for the first time and really liked that too. No disco but beautiful melodies and a blissful spanish guitar. Enough words - have fun with this one! Mysticism

When I found this record I didn't know what to expect. Late Equals, aha. Listened to the 2nd side first (by chance, not out of a habit) and immediately went to ask for the price, as there was no sticker attached to it. After the shock I thought: "ok just listen to the other side before you put it back" and damn that was a mistake! Maybe not..... I heard Mystic Syster and in a flash I was completely up up an away, nodding the head like no good. It's raw and powerful ... and man those synth rhythms : ) After a couple of spins at home I understood why this is in so many wantlists, there's hardly a weak moment on the lp.
More info on discogs and a nice little link on request
Cheers!
PS. We'll have a wonderful guest-mix by one of my favourite DJs coming up very soon. Relaxed summer vibes for your precious ears!

Happy Birthday Cesare!

Sinceri auguri di buon compleanno! Here's some "tropical" music for you against the cold! (just looked it up and it seems like you are still having 12° Celcius down there : )
Discofil's Petr and Pavl Orm are collaborating with singers Kamelie and the outcome is some sweet and at times pretty cheesy disco and some more progressive tracks. It's not really easy to resist their charms.....

Faster Than Sound!

Another Massiera and Torelli gem. The guys were pretty active back then. Find the details here. Once you downloaded the LP you'll be missing track B2. I didn't rip it because I couldn't stand it and still can't! But I think those of you who dig some good "space disco not space disco" stuff will be pretty happy with the rest of it anyway...

the old man's journey into the unknown

Here's one of those disco LPs that never gets boring. Good sign for a true classic.
Methusalem's "Journey into the unknown" also released as Empire "Self Titled".
Ralf Nowy, who played and produced a bunch of great & partially funky progressive Kraut LPs, is to be held responsible for this nugget. Trevor Bastow pleases us with some fantastic spatial Keyboard work! And the rhythm section - PURE BUST. Enjoy!

Bloooood!

Here's Yan Tregger' Bloodnight from 1982.
I posted several of the tunes over @ the Dream Chimney's Track of the day - all from Side A which is the discoish of the both. The second side is the horror! I must admit I have not seen any of Lucio Fulcio's movies, but I think I will do in the future...

Discophonia

If you believe the hype this is cosmic disco at it's best ; ) If you don't it's still a darn nice electronic album that has some juicy disco rhythms. Some funky drums as well and a good portion of obscure sounds coming out of Julius Vilnonis selfmade Vilnius-5 electronic organ!!
The best thing about the music: just like this LP it is composed for theatre plays, performances, ballet and that kinda weird stuff.
The Argo Electronic Music Group used to be sort of the houseband of the Kaunas Musical Theatre in Lithuania. The sound of this record isn't too brilliant. I know a good couple of guys who own this record and it's the same with all of them copies - looks mint & sounds shit. Nevertheless have a listen and feel free to do some modern dance ......
Cheers,
Basso

How I love this world ......

What is the most beautiful thing about Disco-Music written for a ballet?
You (imagine being the performing artist) don't have to care too much about the masses spread across the globe's dancefloors yearning for cheap hooks and stupid refrains (not that I don't fall for them...). Instead you may care about the MUSIC an make it something unique. I'm incredibly happy that Monsieur Petit got that chance to produce this LP along with some well known (at least for all you Discodiggers) musicians such as Andre Ceccarelli, Piere-Alain Dahan and Jean Schultheis in 1980(what a wonderful year!).
Jean Claude Petit is really going wild on various instruments (see Discogs for the LIST of synths, sequencers and keyboards JCP used) and I therefor praise him. I wanted to write a bit about the songs included, but to be honest I don't where to start and how to reduce it to a bit then. So I quit losing words and move to the point. Due to the fact that this quite rare LP unfortunately has not been reissued wether on CD nor LP I don't have any pangs of conscience to post this beautiful piece of music here or here
I hope you like it!
Cheers,
Basso
P.S. A million thanks to T. and V. for bringing this into my world. Rocko's the name!
