      Philippe Besombes - Princess Lolita

    WTF? Give it a listen and see if you don't agree. In the late 70s the French label, Divox, approached Philippe Besombes about releasing an album of his music. Most of the tracks presented were experimental tracks for ballet, different films, etc. Divox wanted a "hit". Being the late 70s a hit would necessarily be in the disco vein as disco was pretty much ruling the airwaves and clubs. What Besombes delivered was Princess Lolita. Not exactly hit material, but fun none the less. The male vocals are slowed way down and the female vocals are sped up to the point of sounding like a cartoon. Cesi est Cela featured 4 tracks from Besombes' archives and the 'hit'. The album was reissued 35 years later on CD with 6 bonus tracks and Princess Lolita was included as the first track but was given the number 0. Very confusing to most CD players, so the track is pretty much skipped. That's probably the way Philippe Besombes intended it to be.

Let the man himself tell you something about this rcord and digging in Japan:

"I found this record in Osaka which in my opinion is heaps better for digging than Tokyo - especially for Japanese records. There was one shop in Amerikamura which was run by a great guy called Norio who was totally digging the Electronic/Disco/Fusion/Cosmic sound. He had some great records in the store but it was mostly European or American and by this stage I totally had the bug for the Japanese stuff! I seem to remember I had to ask him if he had any Japanese records though because there were none or very few on display. After a bit of rummaging around the storage he passed me a handful of Japanese records. I found it strange that there were so few Japanese records on display but I quickly learned the reason for this was that the locals simply weren't so interested in the Japanese stuff. Aside from the fact that so few Japanese pressed records make there way to these shores, this might be the reason that rarely even get to hear about any of these gems. Norio seemed to be one of the few that really digs the Japanese stuff though and he really got a kick out of my enthusiasm for this stuff and it was great in turn to share some of my own Japanese discoveries.

It's pretty hard to find too much information about the group Imitation only that it was their debut LP and it was formed by former Sadistic Mika Band keybordist Yu Imai. The LP also features guest appearances from Dolette McDonald and Steve Scales who both performed with Talking Heads and Imitation certainly seem to have been inspired by that later Talking Heads sound. I guess it was the track 'Narcissa' which first had me flipping out in Norio's shop coming all over like some new DFA record. The blissed out 'Oriental Oriental' sealed the deal for me but definitely give the rest a chance too as there's some real growers on there!"

Rockin' Down Under

Colossus is Cybotron's second lp, released in 1979. Geoff Green and Steve Braund are joined by new drummer, Colin Butcher who also plays synthesizers. Butcher is clearly a rock drummer as you'll hear on these tunes. 4 long tracks reaching for deep space.
