Vangelis Tames the Wild Rockers

It's no secret Phos was one of the finest progressive rock albums produced after Aphrodites Child parted ways. Including Vangelis on keyboards was a stroke of genius and most folks consider the result of this collaboration the best offering from Socrates Drank the Conium. Vangelis mellowed the sound and though he co-authored only one track on the record his influence is heard throughout the  recording. My copy and my rip are from the US version on Peters International Cosmos. (label = Phonogram). This is a modified rip and the tracks are stretched a bit length-wise. It you like your tunes longish, this is your rip.

Jeff Resnick... nine minute sample of a holy grail record

That's a nine minute taste of one of my favourite albums "ever".

I have to thank Reza's post for letting me discover it.

That's how Jazzy Jeff Resnick (who recently joined The Growing Bin: thank you Jeff!) describes his Holy Grail record:

In 1978, I scored the music for a promotional film about the School of American Craftsmen and School of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. My challenge was to create “tone poems” as an emotional connection to each department within the schools. Thus, the song titles on this CD! The first 5 tracks were recorded and mixed in four hours, thanks to very talented musicians from the Eastman School of Music. When the money ran out (rather quickly), I was asked what I could do for Side 2 of a promotional LP to be pressed as a hand-out to prospective students nationwide. I fired up my 4-track reel-to-reel deck and entered the bizarre world of the “one-man-band” for the first time. That process is much easier today with computers and MIDI, but in 1978 I was way ahead of the curve! The final four selections were layered, track upon track, using a metronome for tempo. That was the last I heard about the project until 30 years later, when the “last sealed copies” of the LP were sold on the Internet for more money than I remember being paid in 1978 to produce the entire project! Since then, music from the film has been heard worldwide, leading me to produce this “Collector Limited Edition.” I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working (and playing) on it. And Thanks to Gianni for "finding me."

Cosmic Petrology

More Lasry? Of course; never too much Lasry in the Bin. Seven Stones is another RCA Victor production media outing. This time we have help from Denis Lable on electric guitar and Joël Fagerman playing a Prophet 5 synth on Amethyst, the first track on the B side of this lp. Multi-instrumentalist Lasry plays: RMI Keyboard Computer, ARP Odyssey, Micro Moog, Prophet 5, Korg Polyphonic Ensemble, Korg 3300, Fender Piano, soprano saxophone, clarinette, flutes, drums and percussion. How's that for a credits list? Lasry is a champion instrumentalist.  The record was released in 1979. Nuff said . . .

Postcards from the Underground

Moving on into 1976 with Sensations' Fix. This time the recordings were made in a studio with professional equipment. Some say this is the best album, though for me that's a tough call. I have a fondness for the first two. Finest Finger features more vocal tracks with some great lyrics. Falsini has a unique way with words. The group is now a quartet with the addition of Steve Head on keyboards. Falsini is still contributing keys to the sound, as well, so lots of synth sounds on this one.

Not even organic wieners..... something told me it might be tasty with the wieners chopped up in thinnest slices but it fucked up my breakfast this morning.

I just wish I had some african stew instead!!

Library Curiosities

Another production library record? Sure, why not . . . I'm not sure what Ralph Haldenby contributed to this very fine slice of library vinyl other than his name. The songs were composed by Uwe Buschkötter. There is no Haldenby listed in the credits, either. Side A of the record is titled Action and features uptempo tracks with lots of bass and synth driven melodies. The B side is titled Lyrical and is slower and more laid back. Electronic instruments are still featured but the sound is much mellower. Something for everyone on this one. Thanks to Basso for giving me the heads up on this record. Just shared this one with a friend and since it's ripped and uploaded, may as well share it with the world, eh?

A Fine Fix

Portable Madness is the third triplet in the set Falsini and crew recorded in the early 70s. First was a self-titled promo-only set followed closely by Fragments of Light. All three were recorded in their studio on a farm near Florence, probably on the same Teac 4-track used to record and mix this album. All three were released in 1974. The records have similarities, being siblings from the same parent, but also display distinct personalities. This set is all instrumental where Fragments had a few vocal tracks. If you enjoyed Fragments you'll probably be happy with this one, as well.

Latter Lasry

Back to Amazonia was one of Teddy Lasry's last full lps. It was released in 1987 on the Sonimage label. The tracks are the usual eclectic mix of jazz, ambient and cosmic sounds. Lasry had help from Jean-Michel Hervé and Jean-Philippe Rykiel with the synthesizers. Guy Cassuto plays trumpet on a few tracks. Multi-instrumentalist Lasry takes care of the rest (reeds, keys, percussion, and strings).

Terrordisco - Shortwave

here's a great / experimental mix from Terrordisco a.k.a. Sveinbjörn from Reykjavík, Iceland. He contacted me after hearing Abel's last mix for the growing bin describing "Short Waves" with words like this: "It's kinda conceptual, rooted in memories of playing around with shortwave radios when I was a kid."
Yep, that's what it is! And it's full of wonderful bittersweet moments....

The Cosmic Equation

More Lasry for synth fanciers. This one is from 1976 on the RCA Victor production media label. Lots of spacy noodling and some fine percussion on a few tracks. Lasry is credited with all instruments except bass which is covered by Jannick Top. Lasry's instrumental credits include reeds (flute, sax, and clarinet), mallets (marimba and percussion), keys (synths, clavinet, electric piano and piano). Some nice long tracks are included with this release, so it's one of my favorite Lasrys.

Miguel - Breathing The Rain Drop

Some time ago I got this this lovely ambient mix from my friend Miguel, who is a music promotor in Oporto, Portugal working with onedotzero and arquivo, organizing listening sessions and daily playlists.
I liked it so much that i asked permission to post it here and that's what I'm doing now. Thanks Miguel!

"Breathing the rain drop" is a wonderful deep meditation and the only cure against this hectic internet life.

Krautberry Jams

Blitz is the third album from Thirsty Moon. This one is a full instrumental set with the Drogies brothers Jürgen and Norbert on guitars and drums. Unfortunately these are the only credits given for this release with the exception of the artwork on the cover credited to Gil Funccius. Lots of moogery and stellar drumming on all tracks. Longest track on the record, The Jungle of your Mind, is a showcase for the band's percussion mastery. My copy of this record was an Australian release on the Clear Light of Jupiter label. It was released in 1976 which was also the year of the original release on Brain.

how does Brown taste?

maybe Jan Huydts knows? Or Ali Haurand or Leo De Ruyter?? Maybe you'll know after listening to this fine piece of experimental jazz from 1970? Released on the tiny JG label (Jazz Groove... yep it got some groove as well) this record does not wait in every box at the fleamarket, so I thought sharing it would be a nice thing to do.
If you dug this post over here and you wanted it a little less sweet then check out Brown Taste. It's completely different.... Most definitely something for fans of Third Eye. (Hyutds and Haurand were founding members).

Drum & Synth II

Hip Address is David Earle Johnson's third album as a leader and the second with Jan Hammer in the keyboards chair. I would rate this one maybe half a notch behind Time is Free, his first. As usual Johnson is playing an amazing array of percussion toys (and sounding like a one man batucada section), Jan Hammer is hammering (literally) out the melodies and Jeremy Steig is guesting on flute on tracks A5, B2, and B3. This record also features several vocal tracks which as usual are a showcase for Johnson's wit and Zappaesque delivery.

here's one of my favourite finds of the last years - Thierfeldt's "Dilattantischer Sentimentalismus".
Wolfgang Thierfeld, a member of the amazing Release Music Orchestra,  is accompanied by Krzystof Scieranski, Hans-Dieter Lorenz, Friedemann Graef, Albrecht Riermeier, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Paul B. Engel and Bubacar Jameh. Their jazz is contemporary and it's awsome imho. Ambient fusion? I don't know - listen and tell me what you hear!

Cosmic Mashups

Pink Project were an Italian covers band working in the early 80s. They produced cosmic disco versions of popular tunes from Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, Deep Purple, Michael Jackson, Space, Jean-Michel Jarre, etc. Domino was their first album, released in 1982. 6 of the 7 tracks are 2 song mashups. For example, the first track on the b side combines Alan Parsons' 'Hyper Gamma Spaces' with Jarre's 'Oxygene Part 4'. The music is well played and the combinations work well together. This 2lp set is fairly easy to come by and inexpensive if you look in the right bins. And . . . you can dance to this

Cosmic Soukous

Esa was a danceband from Cameroon who blended electronic sounds and disco bass into their soukous (African rumba) sounds. 14 musicians participated in the creation of this first record, released in 1986. Stephan Dayas Nguea, who produced and provided vocals on this album, is still carrying on as a solo act and still using the Esa id. This is my favorite from the Esa discography and a hard one to find, so a good one to share. Hope you enjoy.

Vangelis - The Tegos Tapes

Microneurosurgery with video tapes - Spinal Space-Occupying Lesions, by dr. Stergios Tegos

(Medical Publications, Konstandaras, Athens 1998)

This publication by dr. Tegos is divided into three sections, the first giving a general review of the commonest pathology of the spinal cord, the second detailed descriptions of 35 representative patients, and the third contains video recordings of the operations of these patients. The tapes contain no less than 12 hours of video, and as dr. Tegos puts it; "To provide a more pleasant, relaxing and less monotonous experience even for established neurosurgeons, Vangelis Papathanasiou has composed music for each of the operations separately." Be sure to check out the enclosed pages for a description of Vangelis' technique of "immediateness" for composing this massive amount of tunage. Our providing friend, who wants to remain anonymous, spent the christmas chopping up the 12 hours of tape for us to enjoy. Thank you for the effort! Norskwave

The Cut were a Norwegian New Wave/Synthpop group with a German singer/keyboardist who also wrote most of the songs. Volker Zibell also did the album artwork. Shadow Talks was their first album released in 1981 in Norway and, in this case, 1982 in Germany.
Zeroy has had a nice long vacation from Blogsville, but I'm back with a fresh batch of new jams. More to come . . .
