Wutt wutt

May I present Supersempfft's 2nd LP called "Metaluna" released on the private Wunderwerke Label in 1981. Other than the Roboterwerke and Futurist LPs released on CBS and RCA this album does not feature discoid pre techno tracks but reaggae, calypso and soca influenced electronics unlike anything else in the world of music. Performed by mastermind Dieter Kolb and the drummachine's inventor Franz Knüttel with the help of Franz Aumüller's creative genius (he's responsible for the incredible cover art).
This is freaked out shit!
Anyone interested in this?

Cheerz,
Basso

Better than pilsener?

Maybe? Best is "Piano Jazz from Chechoslovakia" PLUS a lovely pilsener
as I'm celebrating it right now. You have to know that Piano jazz is just my thing.
I am a big fan of Ahmad Jamal, Carla Bley, Wofgang Dauner, Friedrich Gulda,
Lalo Schifrin, Duke Pearson, Krzystof Komeda, Joe Zawinul, Mary Lou Williams and of course Oscar Peterson and all the other great guys (such as Jan Hammer, Ladislav Gerhardt, Rudolf Rokl, Josef Blaha, Karel Ruzicka & Ludek Svabensky) and for me this LP is heaven!
I bought it because of Jan Hammer. I was pretty amazed when I heard his "Malma Maliny" LP on MPS from 1969 because it is quite different from "Tubbs & Valery". I was as amazed when I heard these recordings here - he's so fresh! as we described HipHop acts in the early 90ies.
So are his czech comrades. It is hard to pick a favourite. Every track is different (the pilsener is working by now) an of course brilliant. But decisions have to be made and so I pick "Made in Tunesia" which will soon be a favourite among Compact Disc Jockeys and "Swingin" that is finished right now. Děkuij!

Na zdraví!

Bouillabass versus Lauren

The Crew's 3rd release on Calig featuring Lauren Newton.
There's a lot more freedom in here and it's not my cup of tea.
But ( and this is a very big but) "Bouillabass" is a monster of a tune
and I like "Flying Bird" just as much (check out KEY's same titled LP
from 1977 on Calig including the wonderful "Birds Flying").
Please understand that I cannot say too much about the rest of the tracks
except from "great instrumentation" or "interesting structures" and a "voice".

Cheers,
Basso

Caritas

Back to Jazz. Here's the Frederic Rabold Crew plus Martin Ederer on guitar
from 1974. Lots of energy coming from a drawer somewhere between funky and free. Released on the small Calig (Caritas Lichtbild Gesellschaft) Label from Munich that released incredible LPs like Tomasz Stanko's "Purple Sun", two LPs by Milan Pilar's infamous Catch Up, a rather free Wolfgang Dauner album and three great LPs by Frederic Rabold and his men (later accompanied by Lauren Newton and her voice gives me a strange feeling in the back of my head so I'll not be mentioning her further on).
This is the Crew's 2nd release on Calig, "Flair" from 1972 being the 1st and "Balance" from 1977 the 3rd. (I am still missing "Flair"- offers welcome). As far as I know the Crew's output this is my favourite FRC album. There are 3 more LPs I used to have (one was silverish, one yellow and one on MPS and that tango wasn't too funky) but I got rid of them some years ago.
Back to what I like: every track on this gem (except from "Time Machine")!
Enjoy.

Cheers,
Basso

PS. Did U.F.O. sample "Yahtzee"?

Rhythm Combination & Brass - Wild chick, 1974

I'd bet I'm the last one discovering this amazing session.
If not, enjoy my favourite "Big Band" and the birth of a new dance:
THE PETER HERBOLZHEIMER!!

Positivity

This is the antipode to Heinz Funk.
A lovely and warm breeze embraces me when listening to this.
Enjoy!

I MOOG DI, HEINZ

No kitsch, no Apache, no Popcorn! Weird describes it best.
Heinz Funk never became famous for his soundtracks for
cheesy german Edgar Wallace thrillers or detective TV series.
Due to Wikipedia the 1915 born FUNK still lives.....
I bought that LP in the early 90ies just because of Heinz'
family name. Back home I was pretty disappointed.
This has nothing to do with Funk except from the fact
that it's pure Funk playing. Enough!
The great Luke Vibert called my attention to this goody
by putting "Baccarole" on his Nuggets comp.
It's hard to pick a favourite on this one, but after some
time thinking it had to be the closing track "Wedding Of The Stars".
Unfortunately the B-Side shows some audible scratches.
I guess some friends of mine (sincere Heinz Funk fans)
danced on the record after dancing to it at a party!
cheers,
Basso
PS IF you like this one scroll way down and check out the great Petr Spaleny

Girl you move me

Some of you might remember that this was my favourite song for
longer than half a year. That's a long time for a guy who shows strong variety-seeking-behaviour. The LP version starts off rather spacy -
this Live version is nailed down to the floor of the "Blow Up".
Unfortunately it lasts just for a few minutes. I'd love to hear the whole show.......
Anyway, this is one of my "unfortunate love" tracks, another one is "Pretty girl" by the Beginning of the End. What about yours?
Cheers,
Basso

I want that spaceship!

What I like most about all that "Cosmic Disco" stuff is that I
cannot take it too serious. I like the sounds and the rhythms
and all that (guess it reminds of the days when we returned home
from the playground to watch Captain Future on TV) but all that
can't keep me from giggling once in a while.
Anyway I like dancing with a moronic smile on my face!
I dont't laugh when listening to "Tschoung Fu" - one of the laid back
beauties featured on this excellent LP.
Cheers,
Basso

Fred?

Does anybody know what the F. in his name stands for?

What does it mean?

Hey folks, check out the Wild Magnolias website here!
You'll find a great version of Handa Wanda but no explanation.
PLEASE TELL ME: WHAT DOES HANDA WANDA MEAN?
And don't forget to have a look at the pictures!!!!!

I am a brainwashed follower!!

This could be labeled as "Progressive Fusion Jazz" or "Progressive Jazzrock" or whatever. The Silesian Blues Band is a trio from Poland and they play music.
This LP (their 6th) was recorded 1977 in Hannover, Germany - a city known for trade fairs, an ugly city center and a lousy football club. I keep this LP for ONE reason - the title track. It gives me a shiver every time I put it on. Reminds me of Dr. John's "Glowin", if you know what I mean. Let's see if it works on you too...................... LINK

cheers,
Baszo

What else than yellow?

I cannot imagine any other colour than yellow..... but I defintely can imagine what it feels to wear a silly yellow suit and even sillier shoes. If my manager or a photographer made me wear stuff like that I'd grunt and groan.
But these guys play incredible music instead and therefor I praise 'em.
Great stuff all the way through. Not your ordinary funky chicken LP but serious and sometimes psychedelic with electric guitars and all that. My favourite part of "All that" is Dexter Wansel's delicious & spacey keyboard work. For the Heads there's a drum break that appears in The D.O.C.'s "Whirlwind Pyramid" and the beautiful "All along the seashore"was used for MF Grimm's "Yes you are" (It took me some time to find that out). My favourite track is the laid back "Happiness" - yes it is.
I LOVE PHILLY!

cheers,
Basso

A spaceship? No it's Provolone!!

The big chunk of cheese travels through time and space and takes all them cosmic kids down to disco hell to spend the rest of their lives dancing naked in melted peppermint cheddar. For real! After having seen this one go on ebay for big money I just visited the local dealer and bought it for a few pennies and that's what this LP is worth. Maybe a few p's more if you're into dancing in cheddar. Check out the featured artists and request the link for your journey up first and down then ...... Don't forget to bring your pelican costume. If you don't own one - ORDER IT IMMEDIATELY
To be serious: There are quite a few wack tracks on this lp, but damn it - the Disco & Company (Arpadys guys) track is at least listenable just as the Vladimir Cosma tracks. Then there's the mad "Pepper Box" by the Peppers (Arpadys guys once again) and the insane Golant Pistons' Pelican Dance. After having listened over the shitty tracks for a couple of times my favourite is "Baby Darling" by the Holiday Mood Orchestra. It gives me a bit of a Melody Nelson meets Sunshine Reggae feeling.

cheers,
Basso

Stuck to the letter J - Stars Sounds The Best

I fell for Jackie and Roy when I found their "Changes" LP on Verve about 12 years ago. "Didn't want to have to do it" is still one of my all time faves in vocal Jazz.
When I discovered this beauty in one of my favourite recordstores in Berlin (PLATTEN PEDRO, who knows a story to almost every LP he sells) I knew that it must be something special. At home I threw away my Novi Singers LPs ....

cheers, Basso

Values

What a value! Did i mention that i like "Hope" more than "Values".
Sometimes I'm not too sure about that. Anyway - here's more by the talented Jiggs.
He brought some talented friends and the well respected Marc Moulin did spend some writing . (I wonder what he thinks about the term "Placebo-Style-Jazz-Funk", often used as a description for average Fusion LPs that include a single trippy drum break).
If you like this one go out and find "Trombone Workshop" on MPS from the same year or George Gruntz' "Piano Conclave" from 1974 which holds breaks trippier than Marc Moulin could think of.

cheers,
Basso

Round trip to the black forest

A little something for the Easy-Bossa-Party. Unfortunately
i sold my original Center copy. Fortunately it went to Japan
and is probably well looked after. Cheers, Basso

Please buy the recent Sonorama Reissue. It features some
incredible Non-LP tracks!

Sincerely P.T.

As promised and then requested here's one of my favourite
german Jazz lps - Peter Trunk's "Sincerely P.T." released on
the tiny Aamok sublabel of Spiegelei Records in 1973.
For information about Mr. Trunk please ask Wikipedia,
they know him there. I knew his name from some
Doldinger LPs and the beautiful "Ultra Native" by Bora Rokovic
on MPS. When i realized that "Soft hands had the rain" from
Rokovic's album is also featured on this lp here i was willing
to pay whatever they wanted. Took me some time to find it
though.

Rest in peace, Peter Trunk and thank you very much!!!!

Manfred Schoof, tp
Shake Keane, flh
Jiggs Whigham, tb
Jasper van't Hof, keyboards
Siegfried Schwab, git + tarang
Curt Cress, dr
Joe Nay, dr + perc

I don't see why you should bring up name like random rap for this kind of dope stuff

The title track is so darn wack that i couldn't even use the photo of side a. It's called "Everything I own" and yes, it's a cover version and these guys dare to sing!! The raps on this "close to completely silly" schmoov groover definitely stand in tradition of LL Cool J's "I need love". Fortunately the other tracks rock like hell. James Brown samples, some dope cuts and a superb rapper that really goes for gold. Guess what song was used for "Goodfoot"? My favourite is "Dance to Excalibur". Rapper X-Calibur goes berzerk over Herman Kelly's "Dance to the drummers beat" without a stop!!

Released on EMF reocrds in 1988
Executive Producer Michael Moody

Blow that trombone, Jigga

Sorry for that stupid title!
This is Jiggs (Oliver Haydn) Whigham's second album under his own name.
The first one is "Values" on the infamous MPS label from the black forest and
is really hard to get nowadays. Besides from that album he appeared on a bunch
of great MPS records like most of Peter Herbolzheimers Rhythm Combination & Brass joints or on Charly Antolini's funky "Soul Beat" or on Peter Trunk's massive "Sincerely P.T." on the superrare Aamok lable ( I will probably post that in few weeks time). I like this one more than his first, because it's a great mix of up and down, slow and fast, jazzy and funky, latin & even a feel of boogaloo.

Produced and arranged by Jiggs Whigham
Jiggs Whigham - trombone, percussion
Ferdinand Povel - saxes, flutes
Rob Franken - piano, fender rhodes
Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen - bass
Grady Tate -drums

Recorded in Cologne , January 24th 1976.
Released 1977 on Telefunken
